Metallographic replicas (RE)

This non-destructive test allows the observation of the structure of a material, without having to take a sample from the artifact under examination. The test makes it possible to detect phenomena of damage or microstructural aging or to interpret the nature of phenomena such as fatigue, corrosion, etc. After carrying out suitable surface preparation and performing a metallographic etching, the replica is taken using a cellulose acetate film. This film is then fixed on a slide and observed under an optical and/or electron microscope.

The investigation can have different purposes: acceptance of materials; verification of microstructural damage following overheating, fires, evaluation of aging phenomena during service, and estimation of residual life.
